Emergency Food Services


The primary service offered by the House of Amos is its Emergency Food Pantry which provides food to families in crisis.
 
Emergency Food Pantry Hours:
     Monday-Thursday (9 a.m. - Noon)
     Saturdays (10 a.m. - Noon) 
 
The House of Amos receives limited food donations from individuals and local food drives. The majority of food is purchased from the Houston Food Bank.
In addition, we receive bread from Whole Foods Markets and donuts from Delicious Donuts on Saturdays. 
 
         In 2011, the House of Amos Emergency Food Pantry served 22,084 individuals  
 
The House of Amos additionally meets the emergency food needs of the Greater Houston Area through the following programs:
  • Monthly Food Fairs
  • The House of Amos holds a monthly Food Fair to distribute fresh produce and other items provided by the Houston Food Bank. In 2011, food was distributed to 1,784 families representing 7,983 individuals through the House of Amos' Food Fairs.  
    Food Fair is held on the second Saturday of each month from March - October 2012 (exception: Food Fair is on the first Saturday in March only - March 3, 2012)
    Time: 10 a.m. - Noon. Come at 8 a.m. to receive a number. Return at 10 a.m. for the food distribution. 
     
  • Saturday Brown Bag Lunch
    The House of Amos provides sack lunches every Saturday of the year to children ages 1 to 18 years of age. As of January 2010, 78.6% of children in the Alief Independent School District qualified for the federal free or reduced lunch program. The Saturday Brown Bag Lunch program meets a very real need.  In 2011, the House of Amos served 5,000 sack lunches. Lunches are supplied by volunteers at the Memorial Drive United Methodist Church.  
     
  • Summer Lunch Program
    Monday  Friday (June, July, & first two weeks of August)
    Time: 11 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
    As an approved site for the Houston Parks & Recreation Department's Summer Lunch Program, the House of Amos distributes well-balanced, nutritious, FREE lunches to Houston's youth during the 10 weeks when school is out. The Summer Lunch Program is open to children 1 to 18 years of age. Lunches are served Monday through Friday, from 11:00 a.m.  until 1:00 p.m. Lunches follow federal and state nutritional guidelines and include one serving of milk, two or more servings of vegetables and/or fruits, one serving of grain or bread, and one serving of meat or meat alternative. In 2009, the House of Amos served 1,993 lunches.
