The House of Amos (a member of the Houston READ Commission, ProLiteracy, and the Commission on Adult Basic Education (COABE)), provides classes in: The House of Amos offers classes in three sessions a year:
Through these classes, the House of Amos promotes economic self-sufficiency by assisting clients in acquiring the skills necessary to obtain meaningful employment and achieve citizenship. In 2010, 242 students were enrolled in House of Amos educational classes representing a variety of nationalities from countries including Argentina, Chile, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Pakistan, Peru, Russia, Sierra Leone, Venezuela, and Vietnam.
The House of Amos also provides its students with opportunities for cultural enrichment including holiday parties and other events designed to enhance understanding of U.S. culture. For example, in 2010, the House of Amos served 526 traditional Thanksgiving meals to area families. The country of origin of the families included Vietnam, Argentina, Peru, Guatemala, Colombia, Honduras, El Salvador and Mexico. HOA’s Thanksgiving feast was the first time many of these families had been exposed to this uniquely American holiday. Meals were generously provided by the Memorial Drive United Methodist Church with financial support from Saint Paul’s Methodist Foundation of Houston.
